The following are important points to remember when you come across a snake:
- Do not approach the snake. If you are not able to positively identify the snake as harmless, you will put yourself at risk.
- Do not try and pick up the snake or any seemingly dead snake. (Some snakes sham dead as a form of self defense, also known as thanatosis)
- Do not attempt to kill the snake. Your closer proximity to the snake raises the chance of getting bitten.
- Remain a safe distance of 5 meters (minimum) from the snake and keep an eye on the snake as they can disappear in seconds. This could mean not finding it and not being able to remove it. Move dogs or other pets to safety
- Immediately contact a snake remover, provide your physical address and as much as possible info about the snake… AND KEEP AN EYE ON THE SNAKE’s WHEREABOUTS!!!
- Keep your safe distance until a specialist has safely rescued and contained the snake.
